A B S T R A C T Methional compounds which may be prepared by reacting .beta.-methyl-thiopropionaldehyde with a large excess of a compound containing at least one mobile proton (alcohol, thiol, thiophenol, etc.) are dis- closed as active ingredients for plant growth modifying compositions. The compounds correspond to the general formula Image in which X and Y, which may be the same or different, represent oxygen, sulphur or a radical N-B where B is hydrogen, a lower alkyl radical con- taining from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R and R' which may be the same or differ- ent represent a lower alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in addition, they may form with Image a heterocyclic ring.
