ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and a coating composition for applying fire-coded wall coverings. The wall surface is first coated with a first layer of a composition containing a water based thermoplastic adhesive dispersion, inorganic filler and fire retardant additives, the web is mounted in the wet adhesive layer and coated with a second layer of the same composition and the two layers are then dried. The aqueous composition preferably contains 10 to 25% of a thermoplastic adhesive, 20 to 40% of water- releasing fire retardant, 2 to 8% of a quenching fire retardant, 3 to 8% of an inorganic filler and other auxiliary additives.
