A B S T R A C T O F T H E D I S C L O S U R E A method and a device for biologically purifying a liquid by means of a mainly aerobic process in which the liquid to be treated is contacted in a treatment space with micro- organisms and at least during a part of this contacting period oxygen is supplied and thereafter the mass of micro- organismes and reaction products is allowed to settle from the liquid. According to the invention the whole treatment takes place in the same treatment space to which the liquid to be treated is supplied batch-wise, and the treated liquid is removed from this space at the end of the treatment, and so much of the settled active mass is kept in said space as is required for treating a next batch. Several of such treatment spaces can be connected in parallel, and also a parallel connection with a continuously operating device is possible for taking up peak loads of the latter.
