ABSTRACT A method and system for improving the signature shape of marine seismic signals is described. The signals are gathered by towing an extended marine seismic array and a receiver cable behind a vessel. The marine seismic array consists of at least two seismic subarrays, each subarray comprising a number of seismic sources. The sources of the marine seismic array are characterized by parameters which are a function of the operat- ing pressure, gun volume and towing depth of the respective seismic sources in the respective subarrays. The parameters of the seismic array satisfy a predetermined mutual relation. The invention provides high quality marine seismic signals and, in particular, provides improved primary-to-bubble ratio and signa- ture shape of the seismic signals.
