A method and apparatus for producing paperboard, the method comprising steps of applying a coating mix layer having a thickness greater than that of the final coat thickness to the surface of the web (6) being coated using a coating mix formulation in which the solids content is at least 55 %, passing the web (6) with the coat applied thereto to a doctor blade (9) located downstream in the travel direction of the web (6) at a distance from the applicator apparatus (5) such that the dwell time from the application step of the coating mix to the doctoring step is at least 130 ms, and smoothing the coat layer to its final thickness by means of a doctor blade (9). By this method, a smooth surface can be obtained even on high coat weights.

Cette invention se rapporte à un procédé et à un appareil de fabrication de papier carton. Ledit procédé consiste à appliquer une épaisseur de sauce de couchage supérieure ou égale à l'épaisseur de la couche finale à la surface de la bande (6) en cours de couchage, la formulation de sauce de couchage utilisée ayant un contenu en éléments solides supérieur ou égal à 55 %, à transférer la bande (6) sur laquelle on a appliqué la sauce de couchage vers une racle (9) disposée en aval suivant la direction de déplacement de la bande (6), à une certaine distance de l'appareil applicateur (5), de sorte que le temps de résidence entre l'application de la sauce de couchage et le passage par la racle est d'au moins 130 ms, et à lisser au moyen de la racle (9) la couche de sauce de couchage de façon à lui donner son épaisseur finale. La mise en oeuvre de ce procédé permet d'obtenir une surface lisse même avec des poids de couche importants.
