ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and an apparatus for reducing the risk of ignition and fire in the preparation of hydrogen peroxide according to the anthraquinone method are disclosed. In the anthraquinone method, anthrahydroquinone derivatives are oxidized by means of an oxygen-containing gas. In the described method, the supply of the oxygen-containing gas is automatically interrupted when light and/or heat radiation from the point or points where the oxygen-containing gas is introduced in the working solution impinges on light and/or heat radiation detectors which are so disposed that they can receive such radiation. Preferably, a gas which is inert to the oxygen-containing gas and the working solution is thereafter supplied. The apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a reaction vessel (1) and one or more gas inlet conduits (3) as well as light and/or heat radiation detectors (6) which are arranged so as to receive light and/or heat radiation from the point or points (7) where the oxygen-containing gas is introduced in the working solution. In addition, to the gas inlet conduit or conduits (3) are connected control means (9, 10) which interrupt the supply of the oxygen-containing gas upon impulses from the light and/or heat radiation detectors and which start the supply of a gas which is inert to the oxygen-containing gas and the working solution.
