Apparatus and method to implement a hybrid contention and polling protocol for a communications or computer network. Various embodiments employ primary station polls (115, 120) to identify secondary stations in an active state; limited contention polls (126) to identify individual secondary stations in an idle state or identify a subset of secondary stations in an idle state to initiate limited contention access to the network; limited contention polls for collision resolution (603) when a plurality of secondary stations in an idle state have simultaneously contended for network access; general polls (122) to secondary stations in an unresponsive state to initiate contention access to the network; and general polls for collision resolution (411) when a plurality of secondary stations simultaneously contend for network access. Various embodiments may include frequency channel allocation for transmission and reception of data within the network. The various procedures and apparatus disclosed may also apply various polling parameters to optimize network performance.

Plusieurs modes de réalisation font intervenir des invitations à émettre de station primaire (115, 120) pour identifier des stations secondaires en activité; des invitations à émettre (126) de contention limitée pour identifier des stations secondaires particulières au repos ou pour identifier un sous-ensemble de stations secondaires au repos afin de déclencher un accès au réseau par contention limitée; des invitations à émettre de contention limitée pour la résolution de collision (603) lorsqu'une pluralité de stations secondaires au repos sont entrées en conflit simultanément pour avoir accès au réseau; des invitations à émettre générales (122) destinées aux stations secondaires ne donnant pas de réponse pour déclencher l'accès au réseau par contention; et des invitations à émettre générales pour la résolution de collision (411), lorsqu'une pluralité de stations secondaires entrent en conflit simultanément pour avoir accès au réseau. Plusieurs modes de réalisation peuvent comporter l'attribution de canaux de fréquences pour l'émission et la réception d'informations à l'intérieur du réseau. Les divers procédures et éléments de dispositif décrits peuvent également appliquer plusieurs paramètres d'interrogation pour optimiser les performances du réseau.
