A voice mail system allows the recipient of a voice message to annotate the message with one or more verbal responses for delivery back to the originating party. The verbal responses are preferably inserted into the original message at the print or points within the message where responses are solicited. Thus, a reply message is generated having questions and verbal responses interleaved within a single message for replay by the originating party. In one embodiment, the message recipient indicates to the system, during message playback, the point in the message where he wishes to insert a verbal response. Playback is then paused and the recipient's verbal response is recorded. Playback is then resumed after the response has been recorded. Additional verbal responses can then be inserted in the same manner.
