S P E C I F I C A T I O N METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR AUTOMATICALLY LABELLING CONTAINERS INVENTORS: JOSEPH J. D'ANGELO -and- JOSEPH J. D'ANGELO, JR. ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Fully automated labor saving method and apparatus are provided for automatically labelling containers, including automatically supplying labels and applying them to the containers. There is a label supply roll of a continuous web of preprinted labels which may also be pre-perforated for ease of separating one from another. This web of preprinted labels is fed past a sensing device for sensing a registration mark on each passing label and an adhesive applicator for applying pressure-sensitive adhesive to each label. A clamp temporarily clamps the web in response to signals from the sensor during the separation of the leading label from the web. The leading edge of each label is fed to a label-engaging station with the adhesive-coated surface thereon positioned facing the container to which the label is to be applied. Conveyor means continually transport a sequence of individual containers to be labelled to the label-engaging station where the respective container comes into contact with the adhesive coated end of the label. Immediately, the container begins to be rolled in a labelling channel defined between a con- tinuously revolving belt having a friction surface thereon, which forms a moving wall of the channel, and an opposed stationary wall on the opposite side of the conveyor forming the other wall thereof for wrapping the label firmly around the container being rolled in this channel. Pinch means are provided at the upstream end of the channel for driving the respective container transported by the conveyor means into firm contact with the adhesive-surface of the leading edge of a label while pressing the outside of the label against the continuously revolving belt, thereby commencing rolling the container within the conveyor channel. After a predetermined amount of wrapping, the web is temporarily clamped and the label is separated from the web either by striking the con- tainer in the conveyor channel thereby separating the partially wrapped label from the web along the perforations or by cutting with a knife or with a hot wire. Following the label separation the container continues to be rolled along within the conveyor channel for completing the wrapping of the label securely around the container. In an alternative embodiment the label so wrapped may be heat sealed. -2-
