A method and apparatus for requesting and allocating bandwidth in a broadband wireless communication system. The inventive method and apparatus includes a combination of techniques that allow a plurality of CPEs to communicate their bandwidth request messages to respective base stations. One technique includes a "polling" method whereby a base station polls CPEs individually or in groups and allocates bandwidth specifically for the purpose of allowing the CPEs to respond with bandwidth requests. The polling of the CPEs by the base station may be in response to a CPE setting a "poll-me bit" or, alternatively, it may be periodic. Another technique comprises "piggybacking" bandwidth requests on bandwidth already allocated to a CPE. In accordance with this technique, currently active CPEs request bandwidth using previously unused portions of uplink bandwidth that is already allocated to the CPE. The CPE is responsible for distributing the allocated uplink bandwidth in a manner that accommodates the services provided by the CPE. By using a combination of bandwidth allocation techniques, the present invention advantageously makes use of the efficiency benefits associated with each technique.
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de demander et d'attribuer une bande passante dans un système de communication radio à large bande. Ce procédé et cet appareil comprennent une combinaison de techniques qui permettent à une pluralité d'installations d'abonnés de communiquer leurs messages de demande de bande passante aux stations de base respectives. Une technique comprend un procédé de regroupement par lequel une station de base rassemble individuellement ou par groupes les installations d'abonnés et attribue la bande passante spécifiquement de façon à donner suite aux demandes de bande passante émanant de ces installations d'abonnés. Ce regroupement des installations d'abonnés par la station de base peut être une réponse à une demande d'invitation à émettre émanant d'une installation d'abonné ou, autre possibilité, il peut être périodique. Une autre technique consiste à demander la bande passante par un accès à califourchon sur une bande passante déjà attribuée à une installation d'abonné. Selon cette technique, les installations d'abonnés en fonctionnement à ce moment demandent une bande passante en utilisant des parties non utilisées préalablement de la bande de liaison montante qui est déjà attribuée à l'installation d'abonné. Cette installation d'abonné est responsable de la répartition de cette bande de liaison montante attribuée, en tenant compte des services fournis par l'installation d'abonné. Par une combinaison des techniques d'attribution de bande passante, cette invention tire partie des avantages de chaque technique.
