ABSTRACT The adhesion of a synthetic polymer layer to a metallic dental component is promoted by the use of a thin layer of a coupling agent containing silica. Such a layer is deposited by use of a flame hydrolysis burner located no more than 150 mm from a gripping device holding the dental component. A gaseous oxidizable silicon compound is supplied to the burner along with a gas-air mixture at a rate such that the maximum velocity of the gas stream at the dental component is 1 m/sec. The length of the flame cone does not exceed the distance between the burner and the dental component by more than 25%. Relative motion is provided between the burner and the gripping device holding the dental component.
