ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus for bubble shearing are dis- closed in which nascent bubbles are formed by flowing gas through the very small capillary openings (no longer than about 100 microns in diameter) of a gas diffusing surface into a moving liquid that shears the nascent bubbles off as it moves past the capillary openings. In the apparatus, the gas diffusing surface forms one wall of a liquid transmitting slot through which the shearing liquid flows as it shears off fine gas bubbles. Two main hydrodynamic features are disclosed for both the method and the apparatus: 1. A partially developed laminar boundary layer growing in thickness in the downstream direction is established above a substantial number if not all of the capillary openings at which nascent bubbles are formed and sheared off. These openings are preferably located in close proximity to the lead- ing edge of the gas diffusing surface. 2. The liquid over all capillary openings that are present in the gas diffusing surface is substantially free of any typo of flow other than partially or fully developed sub- stantially parallel laminar flow. In the method, the partially developed laminar boundary layer extends over at least one-quarter of the capillary openings in the gas diffusing surface. test is described, with specified conditions including the use of water at 20°C. as the shearing liquid flowing through the liquid transmitting slot of the apparatus with a mean entrance velocity of a stated amount, to determine whether a particular piece of bubble shearing apparatus comes within the scope of the invention. Another feature of the apparatus is that it meets a "figure of merit" expressed in terms of a maximum value for the product of the average slot width times the distance from the inlet end of the slot to the most remote capillary openings in the gas diffusing surface. The maximum distance from the leading edge of the gas diffusing surface to the farthest downstream capillary open- ings is disclosed. A gas transmitting body or gas "bar" for use in the apparatus of the invention is disclosed, as well as a method of fabricating such a gas bar. This invention relates to apparatus and method for diffusing fine gas bubbles into a body of liquid, and to s method for fabricating such diffusion apparatus. - 2 -
