An apparatus for burning material having a primary burner in the form of an elongated cylinder, the ends of the cylinder closed with stationary end walls. Drive means rotate the cylinder about its longitudinal axis which is horizontal. A material inlet is provided in one end wall for feeding material into the cylinder. Air inlet means introduce air into the cylinder to promote burning of the material in the cylinder as it rotates. Material outlet means in the other end wall are provided for removing inert residue from the cylinder. Combustion gas outlet means are provided in the one end wall. A secondary afterburner is provided adjacent the primary burner and conduit means lead combustion gases from the primary burner, via the gas outlet means, to the secondary afterburner to burn the combustion gases.
