ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The calibration of an elongate synthetic thermo- plastic plastics member having a chamber extending lengthwise thereof and having predetermined cross-sectional dimensions and wall thickness (es), is effected by receiving the plastics member from an extrusion die from which it has been extruded and cooling the plastics member by drawing it through a calibrating die in which the surface of the plastics member is subjected externally to a vacuum and to cooling by means of a liquid coolant supplied through passages extending lengthwise through the die, which vacuum is applied to the surface of the plastics member through a plurality of slots opening out from the calibrating die onto the surface, the slots being transversely disposed with respect to the direction of travel through the calibrating die of the plastics member at positions spaced apart at intervals which together span over substantially the whole length of the calibrating die, all of the liquid coolant supplied to the passages being discharged from the passages into the vacuum slots to be withdrawn in liquid form from the die through the slots by said vacuum as it effects calibration of the plastics member whereby the liquid coolant effects direct cooling of the surface as it travels along the slots in a direction across that of travel of the plastics member through the calibrating die. The invention also provides a calibrating die for use in the production of the above elongate synthetic thermoplastic plastics member having a chamber extending lengthwise thereof, which die is constructed to receive the member from an extrusion die and to cool it and subject the surface thereof to a vacuum as it passes therethrough, the calibrating die being formed of a plurality of parts extending lengthwise thereof, dividing the die at a plane or planes extending parallel to the length direction of the die and together defining a die passage for through travel of the member, which parts are formed with passages extending length- wise therethrough for throughflow of a liquid coolant and, at those surfaces thereof which bound the die passage, with slots opening out from the calibrating die and extending transversely of the length direction of the die at positions disposed over substantially the whole length of the die passage, which passages for throughflow of coolant are connected to the slots whereby a circuit is formed whereby all of the coolant supplied to the coolant passages can be discharged, by means of an applied vacuum, through the slots whereby the coolant effects direct cooling of the surface of the plastics member as it travels along the slots in a direction across that of travel of the plastics member through the calibrating die.
