A method for enabling an electrophotographic printing machine having a customer billing interface to bill the customer for finishing operations performed includes programming variable - rates for finishing operations into a machine controller. With receipt of a machine enable signal from the customer billing interface, the marking operation is initiated. The controller emits sheet fed pulses for each sheet marked, and, at the completion of a set or stack, emits sheet fed pulses corresponding to the type of finishing performed.
