Articles having the appearance of a naturally-occuring material such as wood or leather are formed by (1) providing a plurality of grooves in a surface of the article, (2) applying a surfactant to the article surface, (3) applying color solutions to the article surface. The article may be plastic, a solid substrate, a part or a film. A top coat (414) is preferably applied to the article surface. The movement of the applicator implement (214) for applying surfactant and color solutions is controlled (224) as is the saturator tool (216) for modifying and synthesizing the solutions on the part surfaces and permeating the solutions into the grooves.
