A blood collection apparatus comprises a specimen container (40), sealing plug (41) and needle holder (30). The specimen container (40) is made of glass with the external surface being coated with a polymeric material. The needle (21) has a friction reducing compound. The sealing plug (41) has an internal cavity to receive the needle and means (73) for directing the flow from the internal cavity to inside the specimen container.
