A method and apparatus for forming a tensioned garter and bondingit to a substrate while holding the garter in a predetermined shape. A garter is any continuous loop of elastic material or a laminate of elastic bands and one or more flexible backing sheets. In one embodiment mandrels having a perimeter of the desired garter shape are mounted to a rotating drum. Tensioned elastic ribbons are progressively wrapped, sealed, and cut around the mandrels to form individual tensioned garters which cling to the side walls of the mandrels. In another embodiment each mandrel has a top surfce. The upper portion of a garter has sufficient elastic tension to cause it to fold over the mandrel top surface to form a garter flange thereon. A substrate is then engaged with the garter flange and an external sealing means seals the flange to the substrate, using the mandrel top surface as an anvil. In still another embodiment the mandrel top surface has a raised outer rim. An ultrasonic horn seals a garter flange to a substrate where they are supported by the mandrel rim. The mandrel rim is shaped to provide a continuous seal which is weakened at its inner edge. When the weakened edge is broken, substrate and garter materials inside the seal edge are removed, thereby forming a hole around which the remaining portion of the garter may contract. Vacuum is applied from the mandrel top surface to the substrate inside the garter in this embodiment in order to break the seal edge and remove this material as the substrate and garter are stripped off the mandrel.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de former un collier tendu et de le souder sur un substrat, ledit collier étant maintenu de sorte qu'il adopte une forme prédéterminée. Le collier selon l'invention est constitué d'une boucle continue en matière élastique ou d'un stratifié de bandes élastiques et d'une ou plusieurs feuilles de support souples. Dans un mode de réalisation, des mandrins présentant la forme voulue du collier sont montés sur un tambour rotatif. Des rubans élastiques tendus sont enroulés progressivement autour du mandrin, collés et coupés de manière à former des colliers individuels tendus adhérant aux parois latérales des mandrins. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, chaque mandrin présente une surface supérieure. La partie supérieure d'un collier présente une tension élastique suffisante pour que cette dernière se rabatte sur la surface supérieure du mandrin et forme un rebord sur celle-ci. Un substrat est ensuite mis en contact avec ledit bord rabattu qui est soudé au substrat par un moyen de soudure externe, la surface supérieure du mandrin étant utilisée comme une enclume. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, la surface supérieure du mandrin présente une bordure externe relevée. Le rebord rabattu est soudé sur un substrat au moyen d'un bras à souder par ultrasons, aux endroits où l'ensemble est supporté par le rebord du mandrin, dont la forme est conçue de sorte qu'une zone de soudure dont le bord intérieur est plus faible puisse être produite. Lorsque le bord plus faible est cassé, les matières constituant le substrat et le collier à l'intérieur de la bordure de la zone de soudure sont enlevés, un orifice autour duquel la partie restante du collier peut se contracter étant ainsi formé. Du vide provenant de la surface supérieure du mandrin est envoyé sur le substrat, à l'intérieur du collier, de sorte que la bordure de la zone de soudure soit cassé et que cette partie s'enlève lorsque le substrat et le collier sont détachés du mandrin.
