A method and apparatus for forming a tensioned garter and bondingit to a substrate while holding the garter in a predetermined shape. A garter is any continuous loop of elastic material or a laminate of elastic bands and one or more flexible backing sheets. In one embodiment mandrels having a perimeter of the desired garter shape are mounted to a rotating drum. Tensioned elastic ribbons are progressively wrapped, sealed, and cut around the mandrels to form individual tensioned garters which cling to the side walls of the mandrels. In another embodiment each mandrel has a top surface. The upper portion of a garter has sufficient elastic tension to cause it to fold over the mandrel top surface to form a garter flange thereon. A substrate is then engaged with the garter flange and an external sealing means seals the flange to the substrate, using the mandrel top surface as an anvil. In still another embodiment the mandrel top surface has a raised outer rim. An ultrasonic horn seals a garter flange to a substrate where they are supported by the mandrel rim. The mandrel rim is shaped to provide a continuous seal which is weakened at its inner edge. When the weakened edge is broken, substrate and garter materials inside the seal edge are removed, thereby forming a hole around which the remaining portion of the garter may contract. Vacuum is applied from the mandrel top surface to the substrate inside the garter in this embodiment in order to break the seal edge and remove this material as the substrate and garter are stripped off the mandrel.
Cette invention concerne une méthode de façonnage de bagues élastiques tendues et de collage desdites bagues sur un substrat avant relaxation ainsi que la machine conçue pour mettre en oeuvre la méthode objet de l'invention. La bague élastique visée est une bande de matériau élastique en boucle fermée ou une bande élastique multicouche comportant une ou plusieurs couches support flexibles. Dans une variante, des mandrins dont le pourtour définit la forme voulue des bagues élastiques sont montés sur un tambour rotatif. Des rubans élastiques tendus sont progressivement enroulés, scellés et découpés sur les mandrins pour former des bagues élastiques demeurant accrochées aux parois latérales des mandrins. Dans une autre variante, chaque mandrin présente une face supérieure sur laquelle la partie supérieure de la bague élastique suffisamment tendue s'enroule naturellement pour former une bague à rebord circulaire. Une fois le rebord formé, un substrat y est appliqué et une énergie extérieure de soudage réalise l'assemblage des deux, la bordure supérieure du mandrin servant d'enclume. Dans une autre variante, la face supérieure du mandrin comporte une bordure annulaire surélevée. Une sonotrode est utilisée pour souder le rebord de la bague élastique au substrat au point d'appui des deux sur la bordure du mandrin. Cette bordure est façonnée de manière à permettre de réaliser un joint soudé continu, affaibli le long de sa rive intérieure. En déchirant le bord affaibli, on peut enlever toute la partie du substrat et de la bague élastique située à l'intérieur du joint soudé, ce qui donne un trou autour duquel le reste de la bague peut se contracter. Dans cette variante, la rupture du bord affaibli et l'enlèvement de la partie superflue du substrat sont réalisés en faisant le vide à l'intérieur du mandrin, avant le retrait de la bague élastique de celui-ci.
