METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR COMMUNICATING AN ADDRESS FROM A PERIPHERAL DEVICE TO A HOST COMPUTER Abstract of the Disclosure An address transfer scheme. A serial communications card (11) provides standard and enhanced communications functions. The user sets switches (61) to select the I/O address at which the enhanced features may be accessed. Upon reset the processor (23) reads the switches (61) and loads a corresponding value into the scratchpad register (14a) of a first universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) (14). The enhanced applications program in the host (10) reads the value in the register (14a) to determine the I/O address location of the enhanced functions. If the value is not an allowed value the host (10) treats the card (11) as a standard card. If the value is valid the host (10) accesses the enhanced functions at the specified I/O address. The applications program is therefore compatible with standard and enhanced serial communications cards. Also, the enhanced card is compatible with standard and enhanced applications programs. 04050-1-0855
