ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus are disclosed for compacting a soil stratum by vibrations, with the aid of at least one vibration-transferring member which can be driven into the soil stratum. This member transfers vibrations from a vibra- tion generating means to the soil stratum. In accordance with the invention, the axial extension of the vibration- transferring member is variable both before and in conjunc- tion with the vibration compaction by the member being im- plemented such as to be resilient, elastic or flexible.
