ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for compressing a propelling charge for a subcaliber discarding propelling cage sabot projec- tile is provided. The charge surrounds a tail region of the projectile, and is inserted into a propelling charge casing. The method includes the steps of inserting the sabot projectile, in a downward oriented direction, into a vertically oriented cylindri- cal open ended chamber having a diameter corresponding substan- tially to the inner diameter of the cylindrical propelling charge casing. A piston is provided at the lower end of the chamber and is axially moveable in the chamber. The chamber is filled with propelling charge powder, which is radially compressed. Then, the sabot projectile and the compressed propelling charge is moved axially upward by means of the piston to insert the propelling charge and at least the portion of the projectile surrounded by the propelling charge into a cylindrical charge casing. The caliber of the sabot of the projectile is less than the inner diameter of the propelling charge casing, and a front end surface of the piston is provided with a recess for receiving a front por- tion of the projectile and the caliber sized portion of the sabot and having an inner contoured portion which is adjacent the front end surface of the piston and which provides a transition from the caliber of the sabot to the diameter of the chamber. Prior to the step of filling the chamber, a transition member whose outer contour corresponds to the inner contoured portion of the recess is inserted into the recess to form a shouldered cover for the propelling charge casing, whereby the transition member is suppor- ted by the piston. During the step of axial movement, the sabot projectile, compressed propelling charge and transition member are moved until the upper free end of the transition member lies against the open end of the cylindrical propelling charge casing. The free end of the transition member is connected to the free end of the propelling charge casing to cover the open end of the propelling charge casing.
