A method and apparatus (fig.1) for compressing a plurality of video sequences (fig.2, V1-V10) where each sequence (V1-V10) had information that is common with other sequences. The invention ensemble encodes (fig.2, 220) the video sequences (fig.2, V1-V-10) into an MPEG compliant transport stream (fig.1, E1-E10) using less predicted frame information than separately encoding each video sequence (fig.2, V1-V10). One illustrative application of the invention is efficiently encoding (fig.2, items 220) and transmitting (fig.1., 104) a user interface such as a program guide (fig.5, 560), navigator (fig.5, 570) and the like. The user interface (fig.5, 560) is illustratively embodies in an interactive programming guide (IPG).
