METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONDITIONING THE SURFACE OF METAL BILLETS Abstract of the Disclosure A method for conditioning the surface of a metal billet consists in that the billet is introduced into a bath of molten slag for a depth of the surface layer to be removed with electric current being passed through the billet and the slag bath. This results in the a libera- tion of heat causing the billet to melt down for a depth equal to the surface layer being removed. An apparatus for effecting the above method comprises a melting vessel having a current-conducting bottom part electrically connected with a power source, and a billet holding device including a pair of articulated brackets which carry on their ends rotary current-conducting clamps electrically connected with the same power source. The invention makes it possible to enhance the effi- ciency and quality of the billet surface treating process.
