A carbon monoxide-containing gas mixture which is at a temperature of at least 500°C is conducted in a hot gas line. The hot gas line comprises an outer sheath tube, an inner protecting tube, which is divided into sections, and a protective layer, which is disposed between the pro- tective tube and the sheath tube and consists of a thermal- ly insulating protective composition. A substantially C0- free, gaseous or vaporous protective fluid is supplied at one or more locations through the sheath tube into the region containing the protective composition. This will avoid a formation of carbides and a resulting corrosion ("metal dusting") particularly on the inside surface of the sheath tube.
