Radiocommunications systems having improved soft handoff capabilities are described. During soft handoff a mobile station may have several transmission sources (active set members) supplying it with substantially the same information. Mobile stations which are not moving may not require as many sources to provide adequate received signal quality. Therefore, mobile stations which are not moving are identified using locating techniques and members of the active set are compared with a higher threshold to remove weaker branches more rapidly than when using a threshold that is applied to mobile stations that are in motion.
