The invention includes a method and apparatus (10) for composting source materials, such as organic materials but also including hazardous and toxic materials, by maintaining composting conditions within preselected limits. A sealable container (20) includes an insulated chamber having a base with a gravity well (27); a flat, perforated floor (26) forming a small air and leachate drain space between the floor and the base; and air inlet and outlet conduits. Dampers (44 and 48) control flow of air or other gases responsive to various conditions or sensors. According to the method, the composition of the organic material is amended and/or inoculated as required to convert the source materials to a compostable mixture. Incubating forms a composting mixture from the compostable mixture. The method includes the steps of monitoring and adjusting conditions of the composting mixture to maintain the conditions within the preselected limits. The conditions of the composting mixture are adjusted by aerating the composting mixture or re-mixing the composting mixture. The re-mixed composting material is incubated to yield composted organic material. Various systems are disclosed which use sealable containers designed to function with existing material handling equipment, including, alternatively, fork trucks, roll-off trucks and intermodal equipment.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil (10) conçus pour le compostage de matières premières comme les matières organiques, mais aussi des matières toxiques et dangereuses, par le maintien de conditions de compostage dans des limites prédéfinies. Un conteneur (20) hermétique comporte une chambre isolée possédant une base avec un puits gravitaire (27), un plancher plat perforé (26) définissant un petit espace de drainage pour l'air et le lixiviat entre le plancher et la base, et des conduits d'entrée et de sortie d'air. Des clapets (44 et 48) régulent le flux d'air et d'autres gaz en fonction de certaines conditions ou de détecteurs. Selon le procédé, la composition de la matière organique est modifiée et/ou inoculée, suivant les besoins, pour transformer la matière première en un mélange compostable. L'incubation produit un mélange de compostage à partir du mélange compostable. Le procédé consiste à surveiller et à ajuster les conditions du mélange de compostage afin de maintenir les conditions dans des limites prédéfinies. Les conditions du mélange de compostage sont réglées en aérant le mélange de compostage ou en mélangeant à nouveau ledit mélange. Le matériau de compostage à nouveau mélangé est incubé pour produire une matière organique compostée. L'invention touche à différents systèmes utilisant des conteneurs hermétiques conçus pour fonctionner avec l'équipement de manutention existant, comme par exemple, les chariots à fourche, les chariots à manutention horizontale et les équipements combinés.
