A method for controlling a well, where there is provided a well and a drilling rig controlling the well which has a hydraulic system. A blow out preventer stack is provided containing a least one rig blow out preventer operated by the hydraulic system of the drilling rig and at least one self-contained blow out preventer operated by a self- contained hydraulic system. Should a failure of the hydraulic system of the drilling rig occur disabling the rig blow out preventer, the self-contained blow out preventer will continue to operate or should a failure of the self-contained hydraulic system occur disabling the self- contained blow out preventer, the rig hydraulics blow out preventer will continue to function.
