In methods and apparatus for controlling access via a public switched telephone network to dial-up ports identified by directory numbers, each connection request specifying the particular directory number is detected at a switch of the switched network. On detection of a connection request specifying a particular directory number, call processing of the connection request is suspended at the switch, and a screening request is sent from the switch to a service vehicle. The screening request comprises the particular directory number and data identifying a calling line from which the connection request was received. The service vehicle determines whether access to the dial-up port is permitted to the calling line and returns a screening response from the service vehicle to the switch. The screening response indicates whether the connection request is to be accepted. On receipt of the screening response, the terminating switch completes call routing to a destination determined by the screening response. The switched network may be an Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN).
