METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING THE AMOUNT OF FUEL METERED INTO AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus for controlling the amount of fuel metered to an internal combustion engine through electrically- controllable valve means, such as electromagnetic fuel injec- tors. The valve means delivers the fuel to the engine in a quantity that varies as a function of an electrical signal representing the mathematical product obtained by multiplying a binary number electrical signal by an electrical signal representing a condition of the engine. The binary number electrical signal is a coefficient of the engine-condition electrical signal and is calculated, by a programmed digital computer, from a function or functions describing a desired relationship between the coefficient value and various electrical signals representing variable conditions of engine operation. The binary number electrical signal is repetitive- ly recalculated by the digital computer. However, the product electrical signal is generated continuously or at a rate greater than the rate at which the repetitive calcula- tion of the binary number electrical signal takes place. Consequently, with respect to variations in the engine- condition electrical signal, the product electrical signal used to determine the amount of fuel metered to the engine is up-dated continuously or at a rate greater than that at which the digital computer updates the binary number elec- trical signal. If an engine condition that varies frequently and substantially, such as the engine intake manifold pressure or the mass of air flow into the engine, is repre- sented by the engine-condition electrical signal by which the computer-generated binary number electrical signal is multiplied, then a substantial improvement in engine control may be achieved because accurate fuel metering is possible during engine operation under transient conditions.
