A B S T R A C T To enable molten metal to be transported through extended distance, for example from a holding furnace to a casting machine a pipeline is used which comprises a refractory liner which is externally heated by a heater, e.g. an electric heater, in response to temperature measurements made at spaced positions along the pipeline. The heater is surrounded by an outer layer of thermal insulation contained within an outer metal housing tube, which is cooled by coolant so as to match the expansion of the outer metal housing with the expansion of the refractory liner. The pipeline is provided with means by which it can be tilted for emptying, e.g. at the end of a casting operation the contents of the pipeline may be run back into the holding furnace by lifting the outlet end of the pipeline. The pipeline is composed of a series of pipe sections bolted end to end to form a relatively rigid structure.
