The invention relates to a method and to apparatus for produ- cing fired bulk material, particularly cement clinker, wherein the bulk material is first of all fired and then cooled. In this case the cooling of the hot bulk material takes place by gasification of a fuel, particularly coal, with steam, the reaction enthalpy necessary for the gasification reaction being extracted from the hot bulk material. In this gasifi- cation a fuel gas is also produced which is used for firing the bulk material.
