2086674 9201202 PCTABS00010 A method and apparatus for cooling the exhaust gases from a molten phase furnace, such as a smelting furnace (10). The exhaust gases are conveyed from the furnace to a vertically extending cooling shaft (24) disposed above the furnace, where the exhaust gases are indirectly cooled by means of cooling gas in a circulating gas system (14). From the cooling shaft, the exhaust gases are conveyed to a waste heat boiler (18), where heat is recovered from the exhaust gases as saturated or superheated, pressurized steam.
