Abstract of the Disclosure Disclosed is a method of cooling hot agglomerates con- taining metallic iron resulting from proreduction of iron oxide, by moving of ambient air so rapidly over the agglomerates that little if any reoxidation of the metallic iron results. Also disclosed is apparatus suitable for carrying out such a method comprising a generally circular gas permeable support movable in a generally horizontal generally circular path and hav- ing a feeding station at which the hot particulate material is deposited on the support in a bed of substantially uniform thick- ness, a discharge station angularly spaced around the path of travel of said support for lifting the particulate material from the support, means for passing cooling gas through the bed of material on the support as the support travels from the feeding to the discharge station, and means for receiving the cooled particulate material from the discharge means. The discharge means disclosed includes a drum having a magnetized surface that moves into sufficiently close proximity to the support to lift off substantially all of the cooled particulate magnetic material and drop it onto a conveyor.
