METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CRYOPREPARING BIOLOGICAL TISSUE FOR ULTRASTRUCTURAL ANALYSIS ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a method for the cryo- preparation of biological tissue samples for ultrastructural analysis. The process comprises vitrifying a biological tissue sample under severely rapid conditions and then de- pressurized. The depressurized, vitrified tissue sample is brought to equilibrium at a temperature of less than -140°C. The tissue sample is then dehydrated while maintained in a state of thermal equilibrium. The sample or specimen holding apparatus for cryopreparation thereof comprises a specimen chamber adapted to retain one or more tissue samples and a support assembly attached to the specimen chamber, the support assembly insulating the specimen chamber from energy means. Spacing means are adapted to isolate tissue samples from one another while the tissue samples are in the specimen chamber, the spacing means being removably engaged by the specimen chamber.
