A method of advising the customer upon the use of their customer identifier in the conduct of a transaction. Upon the use of the customer identifier and its submission to an issuer for validation or authorization, a customer notification is dispatched by SMS, e-mail or other communications method to an owner notification address held on file in respect of the customer identifier. The customer could set notification parameters, and in some cases could either allow or disallow the completion of the transaction. Customer identifiers of various types, used in both commercial and noncommercial transactions, could be protected from fraudulent use using this method.
