Lignocellulosic material (201) such as paper are deacidied by exposure to acoustically (109, 111) agitated submicron alkaline particles (119) which adhere to the materials being treated. The alkaline particles neutralize the acidity of the paper (201) and counteract the effects of acid degradation. The alkaline deacidification process does not employ volatile compounds or liquids and does not damage the paper.
