The invention provides a cable winding and deployment device comprising: a reel for storing cable; shaft means for supporting said reel and allowing it to rotate about an axis; guide means for guiding said cable to said reel; and motor means for rotating said reel. This cable winding device includes a number of advantageous features including the following: it operates on low voltage DC, it operates under microprocessor supervision and manual control, it is of light-weight construction (aluminum and steel), it is compact, it performs two functions while most existing devices only perform one of the two - both deploying and winding up fiber optic cable, it does so with less wear and tear on the fiber optic cable, and it is of a modular design which is easy to attach or remove from robot (plug in electrical connectors and bolt-on bracket). Other advantages are also described.
