A small hand-held scanner (12) that scans text in a line at a time operates in conjunction with a system that deskews images of symbols having a non-linear baseline to thereby flatten waviness of the baseline associated with such scanning. A program determines a boundary for each of the symbols (310). Any of the average height, average width, maximum height, maximum width, and average change in height of a bottom of each symbol relative to that of a neighboring symbol is also determined (330). A threshold is used to delineate between a change of the baseline that is due to random hand movement versus a change in the baseline that is due to a descender (360), where the descender generates a greater change, and all of the symbols that are to be on the baseline are shifted to a single flat baseline (370).
Un petit scanner manuel (12) qui lit un texte ligne par ligne coopère avec un système qui supprime le défaut d'alignement des images de symboles ayant une ligne de base non linéaire pour éliminer les ondulations de la ligne de base associées à cette lecture. Un programme détermine une limite pour chacun des symboles (310), ainsi que (330) la hauteur moyenne, la largeur moyenne, la hauteur maximum, la largeur maximum et le changement moyen de hauteur du bas de chaque symbole par rapport à celui du symbole voisin. Un seuil est utilisé pour distinguer un changement de la ligne de base dû au déplacement irrégulier de la main d'un changement de la ligne de base, dû à un jambage descendant (360) accompagné d'un changement important. Tous les symboles qui doivent être sur la ligne de base sont ainsi décalés sur une seule ligne de base (370) droite.
