Abstract of the Disclosure A method and apparatus for detecting coordinates of read-out positions on a gas discharge panel are disclosed. The gas discharge panel is of the type having rows and columns of electrodes arranged in a crossing matrix and after firing a sustain voltage is applied between selected row and column electrodes to cause discharge at selected locations. The sustain voltage is applied sequentially to the selected row and column electrodes for scanning purposes. The light emission is detected by a light pen and the coordinates of the discharge are obtained.
