23843-148 ABSTRACT Method and Apparatus for Detecting Slag in a Flowing Molten Metal A method of detecting the presence of slag in the flow of a molten metal, e.g. from a metallurgical vessel, includes passing an electric current which contains a plurality of frequencies through a transmitting coil 3 which extends around the flow path of the molten metal. The voltage induced in a receiving coil 4 which also extends around the flow path of the molten metal is analysed as regards the magnitude and phase of the different frequencies. The temperature of the melt is also continuously monitored and the values obtained during the analysis of the spectral pattern of the induced voltage is modified using the obtained temperature values. The resultant values are indicative of local conductivity across the cross-sectional area of the flowing molten metal and thus of the proportion of slag present. The values obtained may be used to initiate the closing of a sliding valve controlling the discharge of the metal- surgical vessel.
