The present invention discloses a method for determining the total reduced sulphur content of a gas comprising the steps of introducing a first sample stream of the gas into a reference cell, oxidizing the TRS in a second sample stream of the gas to form SO2, introducing the second sample stream into a sample cell, passing infrared radiation of a wavelength range strongly absorbed by SO2 concurrently through the first and second sample streams of the gas in the reference and sample cells respectively, and measuring the difference in intensity of the radiation passing through the second sample stream in the sample cell relative to the intensity of the radiation passing through the first sample stream in the reference cell, the difference in intensity being indicative of the differential SO2 level between the reference and sample cells, and thus the TRS content of the stack gas. An apparatus to practice this method is also disclosed.
