A radioactive material detection apparatus (20) includes a transmitter (26), a radiation sensor (24) and a controller (30). The transmitter (26) is capable of transmitting information in correspondence with a signal. The radiation sensor (24) has a sensor output and is configured to detect radiation over a predetermined period of time. The controller (30) is configured to receive the sensor output from the radiation sensor (24) and to send the signal to the transmitter (26) for transmission.
