Locating and characterising a magnetised body involves moving a magnetic gradient tensor sensor relative to the magnetised body along a profile, or allowing the magnetised body to move along a profile past the sensor. Magnetic gradient tensor measurements are obtained at points along the profile. A rotational invariant calculated from the eigenvalues of the magnetic gradient tensor measurements is then used to locate and/or characterise the body. The rotational invariant can be the scaled moment of a point dipole representation of the magnetised body, or one third of the square root of the scaled moment. The rotational invariant is modelled and sufficient measurements obtained to over-determine parameters of the model. A system of linear equations resulting from a model of the gradient tensor elements is then solved using the determined values of parameters.
La localisation et la caractérisation d'un corps magnétisé impliquent le déplacement d'un détecteur à tenseur de gradient magnétique par rapport au corps magnétisé le long d'un profil, ou d'amener le corps magnétisé à se déplacer le long d'un profil au-delà du détecteur. Des mesures de tenseur de gradient magnétique sont obtenues à des points le long du profil. Un invariant de rotation calculé à partir des valeurs propres des mesures de tenseur de gradient magnétique est ensuite utilisé pour localiser et/ou caractériser le corps. L'invariant de rotation peut être le moment mis à l'échelle d'une représentation dipolaire ponctuelle du corps magnétisé, ou un tiers de la racine carrée du moment mis à l'échelle. L'invariant de rotation est modélisé et des mesures suffisantes sont obtenues pour surdéterminer des paramètres du modèle. Un système d'équations linéaires résultant d'un modèle des éléments de tenseur de gradient est ensuite résolu à l'aide des valeurs déterminées des paramètres.
