Method and Apparatus for determining relative density of wood. A first step involves providing a vertically oriented container adapted to hold water having an interior cross-section and an elongate piece of wood of a given length with a uniform exterior cross-section just slightly smaller than the interior cross-section of the container. A second step involves partially filling the container with water. A third step involves examining what percentage of the length of the piece of wood becomes wet as it floats freely in a state of equilibrium, such percentage being directly indicative of the relative density of the piece of wood.
