An object moving on a conveyor means (2) is carried through a light curtain (10) generated by a plurality of light guide section converter transmitters/receivers (16,22). From their output signals, the position of the object can be determined by an evaluation circuit (9). This allows precise determination of position at low cost, and simple adjustment and calibration.
