A method and apparatus for diagnosing schizophrenia, schizophrenia disorder subgroup, or predisposition thereto in a test subject is disclosed. The method includes the steps of determining an interhemispheric switch rate of the test subject. In one embodiment, the interhemispheric switch rate of the test subject is under conditions of increasing rate of dichoptic reveral, and comparing the switch rate with a corresponding reference switch rate to diagnose presence or absence of schizophrenia, a schizophrenic disorder subgroup, or predisposition thereto. In a preferred embodiment, the interhemispheric switch rate is determined by measuring the rate of binocular rivalry in the test subject. Also disclosed is use of a diagnostic method in genetic linkage studies for the identification of the molecular defect(s) underlying schizophrenia, and for the identification of compounds which may alleviate the disorder.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de diagnostiquer la schizophrénie, un sous-groupe de troubles schizophréniques ou une prédisposition à la schizophrénie chez un patient cobaye. Le procédé consiste à : déterminer une vitesse de changement interhémisphérique chez le patient cobaye. Dans un mode de réalisation, la vitesse de transfert interhémisphérique du patient cobaye permet d'augmenter la vitesse d'inversion dichoptique, et de comparer la vitesse de transfert à une vitesse de transfert de référence correspondante. Cela permet de diagnostiquer la présence ou l'absence de schizophrénie, d'un sous-groupe de troubles schizophréniques ou d'une prédisposition à la schizophrénie. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, la vitesse de transfert interhémisphérique est déterminée par la mesure du degré de rivalité binoculaire chez le patient cobaye. L'invention concerne également l'utilisation d'un procédé de diagnostic dans des études de liaison génétique destinées à l'identification du ou des défauts moléculaires servant de base à la schizophrénie, et à l'identification de composés pouvant soulager le trouble.
