A method and apparatus for diagnosis of a rod string breakage on a producing well. This method applies to a subterranean well having a ground level service end with a wellhead assembly, where the well has a pumping system that includes numerous sucker rods connected in end to end relation to form a rod string. The rod string is disposed in the subterranean well with an upper end of the rod string positioned at the ground level service end. A lifting apparatus is incorporated into the wellhead assembly at the ground level service end of the subterranean well. The lifting apparatus engages the upper end of the rod string. A human readable display is provided which is coupled to the lifting apparatus to diagnose a position of a break in the rod string upon the rod string above the break being lifted by the lifting apparatus.
