ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A method and an apparatus for a direct airborne electromagnetic prospecting of hydrocarbon deposits wherein it is carried out a circling with an helicopter along a surveying network composed of identical closed rectangular profiles stacked one above the other at different altitudes. Induction signals received during such a circling are compensated for a total signal measured at a starting point of the circling, and the so compensated induction signals which are representative of the amplitude and phase of three orthogonal electromagnetic field components Hx, Hy and Hz are measured and stored. The electromagnetic field compo- nents vary with the flight altitude of the helicopter, with the used frequency, with the orientation of an induction transmitter loop and with the position of the helicopter, the used frequency being at least one frequency selected within the range of 0.1 - 10 Hz. A multidimensional geo- physical information vector is formed from the induction signals and is processed into a discriminant function based on a pattern recognition theory and previous reference helicopter flight results. Last of all, the resulting patterns are classified in accordance with the probability level of a hydrocarbon deposit occurrence.
