A method and apparatus for ionizing a rare gas in a gas type lighting source using a high voltage direct current pulse. Direct current pulses are applied to the lighting source, the current flow to the lighting source is sensed, upon ionization of the gas the voltage level of the pulse is reduced and the pulse width is increased so as to provide a proportionally increased constant current high voltage direct current pulsed output, and the polarity of the pulses to the light source is periodically reversed.

Procédé et dispositif visant à ioniser un gaz rare dans une source d'éclairage de type à gaz à l'aide d'une impulsion de courant continu à haute tension. On applique des impulsions de courant continu à la source d'éclairage, on capte le flux de courant, on réduit le niveau de tension de l'impulsion et on en augmente la largeur lorsque l'ionisation du gaz se fait, afin d'obtenir une sortie en courant continu pulsé à haute tension à courant constant proportionnellement accru, et l'on inverse périodiquement la polarité des impulsions vers la source d'éclairage.
